Using Sewing Machine - Fidget Blankets

Fidget Blankets

Alzheimer’s and dementia often cause older adults to feel agitated, anxious, or have disturbed sleep. One of the ways that individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia show anxiety or agitation is in their hands. They will begin to fidget, restlessly pulling at clothes or blankets, wringing their hands, or rubbing their hands together. A weighted blanket or lap pad is a simple, non-drug option that can be used day or night. They promote deep sleep, reduce anxiety, calm nerves, and provide comfort.

How do you keep dementia hands busy?

Gather things in a variety of colours and textures, like:

Things with zippers or Velcro closures.

Little toys that wind up.

Stress balls for squeezing.

Brightly coloured plastic springs

Mini stuffed animals

A row of buttons sewn firmly onto a ribbon.

A piece of soft fleece or faux fur.

Old keys on a keyring.

You can use absolutely anything in your house like small things from the kitchen (measuring cups, measuring spoons). Small things can be grouped together in a chiffon bag, just sew it closed.
