We pay tribute to Margie Garratt for her compassion and generosity as an educator, and for promoting quilt and textile art in South Africa and internationally
Margie has been a member of the Good Hope Quilters Guild since its inception in 1987. She worked tirelessly with disadvantaged groups in the Western Cape, particularly the Fikelela Aids Project, Clothes for Kids and Imizano Yethu, encouraging skills and providing material help.
Margie was instrumental in uplifting quilt art to a professional level through her curatorship of Innovative Threads, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2005. Innovative Threads was also invited to exhibit in the USA, UK, Japan, New Zealand and Europe and at the same time, Margie provided many empowerment groups from all over South Africa the opportunity to sell their crafts and wares at these prestigious exhibitions.
In the firm believe that upliftment starts with education, Margie has channelled all the proceeds from these exhibitions to the Early Learning Services Organisation, which falls under the umbrella of Catholic Welfare Development.
