Hazelmay Duncan

We pay tribute to Hazelmay as a South African quilting pioneer and for her leadership, initiative, vision and commitment.



Hazelmay Duncan


Hazelmay was the chairlady of the first National Quilt Festival held in Cape Town in 1988. She helped establish and was the first chairlady of the Good Hope Quilters’ Guild.

She was instrumental in establishing the South African Quilters’ Guild and was its second President from 1992 to1994.  She served on the SAQG Committee in various capacities until 2002.

After training with Jeannie Spears in 1990, she served a quilt judge numerous times.
She was one of the tutors in the SAQG Quilt Judge Certification programme in 2002 – 2006.  Hazelmay was instrumental in starting the SAQG Quilt Search Programme.

She started the Pine Needles group in Cape Town in 1982 which is still going strong.
Hazelmay taught patchwork and quilting classes, locally and at Quilt festivals.

 She played a significant role on the committee of Festival 2011 hosted by GHQG.
